We believe that, like the 2 company owners John and Martin, the diesel and petrol combustion engine is going to fade away in the next decade. Electric vehicles (EV) are a great solution for a small island community like Shetland, where no single journey is likely to exceed the range of the vehicle; the Renault Zoe can drive up to 245 miles on a single charge costing less then £5.
You must be trained to work on EVs, and 2 of our senior technicians hold an Institute of Motor Industry (IMI) qualification to enable them to work on all elements of such vehicles.
We have 3 x 22kw EV chargers installed at the garage, and during windy days (plenty here!) we are charging from our wind turbine, which provides fully sustainable power.
EVs are particularly useful for households and families with 2 cars, where the other can be used for longer off island journeys. They generally have no road tax, have lower servicing costs and are ideally suited to shorter island-based commuting that can quickly clog up diesel exhaust filters. They are quiet and comfortable to drive and attract excellent benefit in kind if used as a company car. You'll find negative content about the potential harm of batteries, but compared to burning fossil fuels, they are an environmental dream come true!
Maybe you do not believe that we have global pollution problems, or perhaps you do but you have no control over it, but EVs are a practical way to reduce your current environmental footprint compared to any combustion engine car that you drive...every change, however small, adds to the net improvement for the future.
